Situated in the French Alps, it is famous for its 21 hairpin bends, each named after a past stage winner. The climb itself is about 13.8 km long, with an average gradient of 8.1%, making it both brutally difficult and spectacular.
It first featured in the Tour in 1952, when Fausto Coppi won the stage, and since then it has become a theatre for dramatic battles between the sport’s greatest climbers. Because of its steep gradients and the way the crowds pack tightly along the road, Alpe d’Huez is often compared to a stadium for cycling – riders push through walls of spectators as they make their way up.
